WE DON’T NEED A HOLIDAY
“Let us keep Christmas in our hearts all year,” Scrooge exclaimed! (Charles Dickens-A Christmas Carol)
Dad often said that a holiday was “not needed to get together.” He wanted us to understand that he never expected us to choose between our in-laws and extended family. I share his sentiment. I also agree with his perplexity as to why some relatives seem to have no time or thought for one another throughout the year but should find it so urgent to obligate or expect time at holidays.
I concede that everyday duties keep us busy. However, life does not wait for us to “have time” before it passes. Nor is it a contest to take time for our loved ones. Any good marriage is never “divided up” equally all the time. Both spouses give and take equally, but sometimes at different times. The same remains true with our other relationships, except for one. Regardless of our effort (or lack of), our Father always has and makes time for us, His children!
We tend to treat holidays like we do God. Holidays are richer when spent with loved ones. However, we should make spending time with our loved ones a priority throughout the year. Keeping in touch with our heavenly Father should also be a priority other than Easter and Christmas or merely every Sunday!
Despite the hustle and bustle of life and especially during the holiday season, let us strive to keep Christ in Christmas and let us strive to do so all the year!
“Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests.”
