Bakersfield Educator Awarded National Scholarship

Mr. Kevin Birkbeck, a Bakersfield resident and teacher in the Panama-Buena Vista School District, has been awarded a scholarship by the Association of American Educators Foundation to supplement the cost of attending The James Hill Ukulele Institute for educators. Mr. Birkbeck currently runs the largest ukulele program in the state of California and attends the institute every year to guide his music instruction. “The institute and year long course requires teaching and practicing logs, webinars and submitted projects,” said Mr. Birkbeck, an elementary school music teacher. “This course is critical to my job and has direct pedagogical application to my approximately 150+ students at my four schools.” AAEF is committed to offering individual educators various avenues for improving effectiveness in the classroom.  “AAEF applauds the dedication that Mr. Birkbeck has demonstrated in continuing his education,” said AAEF Chairman Gary Beckner. “These scholarships and grants are an investment in empowering teachers as professionals across the country.” The Association of American Educators Foundation is the non-profit charitable arm of the Association of American Educators, a non-union professional organization for teachers across the country. The AAE Foundation's National Scholarships and Grants competition is held twice a year in the fall and spring and open to all educators. The deadline for the fall competition is October 1, 2012.
