Computer Classes at the Beale Memorial Library, May 2012

 Classes are held in the Gates Computer Lab, second floor.

 Computer Basics, Keyboard and Mouse   Friday, May 11, 10 am – 12 pm. 

Learn to use the mouse and keyboard commands and shortcuts in this introductory class.  

[Please Note: the following classes require a basic knowledge of computer keyboard and mouse:]

Beginning Surfing: Basic Internet,    Saturday, May 12, 4-6 pm.

Internet: Learn the basics of navigating the Internet, search engines, and evaluating Web sites. 

Cloud Computing 101                         Friday, May 18, 10 am – 12 pm.

Learn what cloud computing is, compare the benefits and risks, and find out how to get started.

 Beginning MS Word 2003                   Saturday, May 19, 10 am – 12 pm.

Learn basic MS Word functions such as creating and saving documents, formatting text, and adding graphics.

 Finding Funders for Nonprofits          Friday, May 25, 10 am – 12 pm.

Learn how to search the Foundation Directory Online to find funding sources for your nonprofit organization.

 Tuesdays, 11 am -- Toddler Time!  Parents are invited to accompany their 18-month-old through 2-year-old children for music, nursery rhymes, stories and play – Arkelian Children’s Room

 Wednesdays, 11 am – 1 pm: Personal Computer Coach. Sign up at the Reference Desk or call 868-0770 to reserve 30-minute sessions with a volunteer coach for one-on-one computer learning. Open to all ages.

 Wednesdays, 11 am: 1-2-3 Play with Me. Join us for this special five-session program for children ages 12 months to 41 months and their caregivers. Features experts on nutrition, parenting and child development, speech and language, and physical activity for children. Registration required; call 868-0750.

California Reads: Remembering the Mighty ‘52 Quakes

In 1952 two major earthquakes shook Kern County to its very core. In this discussion and visual presentation, we will examine the earthquakes and how it changed Kern County. Tejon Room

 Thursday, May 10, 7pm: California Reads: An Evening With Rebecca Solnit, author of A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities that Arise in Disaster. Ms. Solnit, an award winning author, makes a spirited argument against the pessimistic view that people respond poorly in the midst of disasters. Books will not be sold at this event; copies may be brought to event for the book signing. Auditorium

 Saturday, May 12, 11 am: Mother’s Day Garden Gift Workshop: Children ages 6 and up are invited to enjoy a gardening story and a gardening poem, learn about plants and gardening, and fill a decorated pot with gardening soil and plants to give away for Mother’s Day. All materials will be provided by the Bakersfield Green Thumb Garden Club.  Space is limited; tickets will be available at the Children’s Desk on a first-come-first-serve basis one hour before the event.  Saturday, May 19, 11 am: Barks and Books – Children, build reading skills by sharing stories with a Therapy Dog - Arkelian Children’s Room.

 Thursday, May 24, 5 pm: Crocheting @ the Library. If you don’t know how to crochet, we’ll teach you! If you do crochet, bring your current project and stitch along with us. Bring your own crochet hook (any size), and smooth, lightweight yarn.

Thursday, May 31, 4 pm:

Art in the Afternoon

: Children, enjoy developing your creativity through different art techniques. Supplies provided. Arkelian Children’s Room. 

 Thursday, May 31, 5 pm: Immigration Workshop and Legal Clinic: An immigration lawyer will discuss immigration rights and ways to prevent immigration fraud, and provide free initial consultation to individuals. The workshop will be presented in both English and Spanish.  Tejon Room
