We have heard it many times..."You play roller derby? I use to watch that when I was a kid, they still have roller derby? where you get to hit people with your elbows and fight?" Roller derby has evolved in such a huge way and is one of the fastest growing sports. We have rules that we must follow and also referees who keep us safe. There is nothing fake or staged about roller derby, the women who play are mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, nurses, medical billers, receptionists and the list goes on. It is a full contact sport that the women who play work very hard at. Practices consist of off skates drills, agility to on skates drills, laps, sprints, sit ups, planks, push ups all while on skates. Anyone who says that roller derby is not a sport has never been to a bout to see how hard these women play and the skills it takes to do all of it on skates, they have clearly never been to a practice and felt the pain of the jello legs but kept going, thrown up from sprints but kept going, woke up so sore the next day from the work out that it is hard to walk. If you would like a great total body work out come out and try a practice. You don't have to know how to skate they will teach you. Be an inspiration, be an athlete, be a role model, and be a derby player.
