Introducing...Me!!!

Hello, my name is Elka Wyatt.  I was not born here but I was raised in Bakersfield.  I moved away a few times...but have always come home to Bakersfield.  I recently moved to a home in the Northwest and really love it out this way.  I certainly do not miss the chaotic and usually criminal environment of the South part of Bakersfield.  The Northwest is a welcome change for my family.

I am a self employed hairstylist.  I work at Hot Hedz Salon on White Lane and Stine Road.  I am also working part time at Mod Hatter in the mall.  I am always accepting new clients.  In fact, if you mention this blog, you will get services at the Friends and Family rate.  You can check out some of my work on myspace...  www.myspace.com/hair_by_elka  Just call or text me...661-364-9835 or on the salon phone 661-831-4339 as I only see clients at Hot Hedz by appointment only.  At  I will usually post my schedule in a bulletin on myspace so if you are interested, add me as a friend.  My ultimate goal is to get enough clientele in the Northwest so I can eventually move to a better salon in this area.

I have been with my "forever fiance" for nearly 11 years.  We have six kids ages 19, 17, 17, 16, 14, and 8.  We also have a grandson due in October which I will get into in another post.

I am starting college on August 25 at Bakersfield College.  My major is journalism.  I am not sure how far I would like to go with it but it will be pretty cool to find out how far I can go with it.  I will probably be using this as kind of like a journal.  I am always open to advice, constructive criticism, and comments.

I am outgoing, usually pleasant, fun loving, and charismatic.  I enjoy karaoke, dancing, blogging, talking with friends on myspace, barbequing, going to the beach, reading  and spending time with my family.

Wow!  Welcome, Elka -- what a beautiful name.  I love it that you are a Northwest "transplant."  :)  Welcome, enjoy, stay, blog, and write articles, too.  As you may guess, journalism is very near and dear to my heart.  Please make The Voice your writing home.  There are all sorts of topics on which to write, and I think you'll find our blogging community one of the friendliest around.

Take care, and I look forward to hearing all about your journey as a B.C. student.  Our publisher, Olivia Garcia, teaches a journalism class up there.  If you have the opportunity to take her class...DO!

Dana...I am taking the class that I believe she is supposed to be teaching...Media and Society...I guess she is on maternity leave or something like that.  Anyways, it's a great class...all of them are great and I am having a wonderful time.  I love learning and feeding my mind.

I am a hairstylist so the artistic side of me is always challenged.  Now I need to be academically challenged...I am already mentally challenged...LOL

I just feel like there are so many changes that I need to make in my life before I can be happy with who I am.  I love doing hair, but I just feel like I am supposed to do more with myself.  I enjoy writing.  I enjoy reading.  Everyone always teases me at home because I am always with my nose in a book.  I have stacks and stacks of books in tubs in the garage and I have read every one of them, some of them more than once, some of them even more than twice.

I love romance novels, especially if they are in a medieval or pioneer setting.  When I had my hot tub, I would sit out back in the hot tub for hours reading.  Now, without it, I sit in my bathtub reading.  Ask anyone in my house...Mom's favorite pasttime is reading.  Television bores me.  There are way too many reality shows in my opinion.  I feel that they show people at their worst.  There is really nothing that catches my interest as far as they are concerned. I do like documentaries like on the History Channel or on Discovery.  I do like shows like Law and Order...all of them, CSI...all of them and certain movies they show on Lifetime.

I am looking forward to taking History classes at BC.  History fascinates me.  European History, because my mother's family is from Europe, American History, because events of the past shaped this country into what it is today.

When I was in high school, I could care less about all of that.  The only classes that interested me was science.  I remember failing every class except Orchestra and Life Science.  I got A's in both of them.  Go figure.  I have a bit of ADD (not ADHD) and it seemed as if I only excelled in the classes that kept me interested.  I was always in my own little world and it drove my teachers crazy.   One teacher wrote that I liked to daydream.  It was more or less tuning out because there was nothing that held my interest.  But Life Science was a breeze for me.  Learning about amoebas and chromosomes and fungi and spores...it all fascinated me and out of the many classes I took, this was one of the few that was able to grab my attention.

So now that I am older and have learned how to control the side of me that is easily bored, I am finding a whole new world out there called education, and it is pretty darn exciting.
