I want my home to look like those makeovers on television - Start At Home - yindab's Blog - The Bakersfield Voice

Q. I want to make some changes in my house but I don't know where to begin. I definitely cannot buy a lot of new things, and the things I do have are not new and not all that great. Where do I begin?
A. You would be very suprised what a trained decorator can do with what you already own! Many people have items that they wouldn't even consider using, but a redesigner will see them in a different way, and you can too.

Clear your room - clear your mind - and then begin.

Floral arrangements or greenery? Look outside. Your yard is full of items that would look beautiful in a vase.

Artwork? Gosh, magazines have great pictures you could add an inexpensive frame to. Even greeting cards can be framed. Or buy a few artist canvas boards and spray paint them or wrap them with wrapping paper.

Have a friend over for inspiration, and hands-on help. And if you still are feeling challenged, call for a redesign today!

Jul 8, 2008 at 11:07 AM : These are fabulous...

These are fabulous ideas... I especially love the photo. It seems so easy, but some of us <grinning and pointing to self> don't have an "eye" for things. What I have noticed is that I don't really "see" my house until I have a reason to: if someone is coming over is usually the main reason I look more critically at my stuff. Also, there is nothing like teenagers to help you realize how outdated your house looks! "Mom... please do something with your bedroom. Those ceramic rabbits HAVE to go!" What?? I hadn't 'seen' those rabbits in years -- I just looked past them!

Interior re-design would be awesome. For anyone on a budget, especially... to have someone with a fresh eye come in and rearrange things. That would be lovely! <sigh>

Redesigners offer a one-hour consultation which can be used to gather many decorating ideas -- things that you can do yourself to enhance your room. For those who feel that they can do their own shopping, I give my clients specific ideas along with ideas on where to shop. Sometimes it just takes having a plan of action. Our homes should be a sanctuary for our families. Many people think of room design as "just decorating," but it really is much more than that.

Since I believe in recycling and reusing as much as possible, what I really like about re-design is that a lot of new stuff isn't purchased. Living in a well-ordered and attractive environment is very satisfactory - you tie in many elements and make it easy!

I think one of the biggest benefactors of re-design (and I could be wrong) are people who've lived in the same house for years. I bet they have treasures all over the place that, if placed somewhere else, would look so much better. I have someone in mind, but I don't want to "out her" on here! haha

Is it a very expensive service, I wonder? At any rate, it has to be way LESS expensive than having to replace everything with all new stuff. :)

You are funny! =) I suppose we all have that "someone in mind" that could use a little decluttering (like a HUGE yard sale) and then have what's left properly arranged. It's very rewarding for us to do it, and also for the homeowner to live with the final results. Often what surprises the homeowner is that they DO have some really great things lurking amongst all of the collections and it's nice to see them realize that. Redesign is the most affordable way to "completely" redecorate - usually less than the cost of one new piece of furniture (see www.bratcherredesign.com) and there are no decisions to make, no shopping to do, and it all happens in one day! I love what I do. =)

Ok, here's the catch: My friend is also a cluttter collector. There are papers everywhere, old pencils, pieces of plastic that may or may not belong to something else, rubber bands, scraps, etc. It's the piles of paper that seem to overtake the house. So, in cases such as hers, how can you do an interior redesign if there's clutter? It's clean, a little dusty, but just clutter everywhere.
