This is really interesting — you've got a great point about money funneled out of schools for software subscriptions.
The free software sites you included above look good — Zoho was especially multi-functional.
As long as alternative software functions were comprable to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint functions (so kids could function on all types of software), I'd say this is an excellent idea.
