My 9 year old Nevan is now a cub scout, - a “Webelo” to be exact. As a “Newbie” to the scouting world I didn’t know what to expect. I was both excited and nervous. Would he fit in? Would he have fun? WOULD HE BE A SPAZ???? Not sure the answers I “volunteered” my husband, (an ex-cub and Boy Scout) for the open position of Webelo den leader for pack 25 out of Veterans/Norris Elementary Schools. I figured it to be good bonding time for Father and Son and it might also help our son “un-spaz” a bit. (He’s nine, a middle child and a BOY- so you know how that goes!)
“S’mores Summer Fun” was our first Cub Scout pack 25 event and I decided to go a long to see for myself. I expected to see a few frantic leaders and a gaggle of wild boys but what I saw was an organized group of pack leaders and instead of a gaggle of wild boys groups of families were there in support of their Cubs, moms, dads, brothers, and sisters. The boys played kickball, were awarded badges and rank advancements, did the pledge of allegiance, and ended the night with a bonfire and S’mores. What I experienced that night was excitement, good sportsmanship, and camaraderie, a sense of patriotism, responsibility and overall fun for the whole family.
Maybe I’ve been bitten by the “Scouting” bug or maybe it’s been in me all along- either way I’m proud to wear the title of Cub Scout Mom. Am I still worried about my son being a spaz? Sure- but I guess they all are at that age but the first time he stated by memorization to do his duty to God and his country and to obey the law of the pack- I was hooked. (So, hey- where do I get the license plate cover, “I’d rather be scouting?”)
