Sometimes I think about how fortunate we are in Southwest Bakersfield, to see young people with so much oppurtunity and wealth in their communities: wealth in knowledge, wealth in support, wealth in ambition.
Being a student at Stockdale High school, I, myself, and a group of fellow students have taken charge of a fundraiser called ODFL-One Dollar For Life. Founded only a couple years ago by high school students in Palo Alto, California, their philosophy compelling students to make a change in this world.
The fundraiser is a non-profit organization asking for only one dollar per every high school student to help build schools in developing countries like Nepal, Indonesia, and Kenya. We ask for only one dollar from each student because. for some of today's youth, a dollar is nothing but an Itunes download or a cookie at school. The truth is: anything counts. If each student were to give a dollar, in partnership with other high schools, ODFL could bring light to somebody's future and erect a building to learn.
We at Stockdale want to help show that not only does the money sustrain, the act of giving may change the character of American teenagers to realize, we can make a difference. ODFL takes an honest approach when they say, no amount of fixes can fix the world, but when we decide to become compassionate and connected young people, positive changes can be made.
During the two weeks at Stockdale, January 26th through February 6th, donation boxes will be put inside all classrooms, posters will hung, videos will inform, and the passionate will speak out. I personally, will be rallying students in a handpainted tee-shirt, calling out to anybody with some spare change and itch to begin standing up for ourselves and what it means to change the world.
