The American Heart Association invited women of Bakersfield to view a unique survivor gallery at this year’s Go Red For Women Luncheon on February 3, 2009 at the Marriott Hotel in Bakersfield.
The Go Red For Women Survivor Gallery is a photo exhibit of local heart disease survivors who have an emotionally compelling story to tell of courage, endurance and the road to a healthier life. The series of black and white portraits honors those who have survived heart disease or stroke aims to educate women that heart disease affects women of all ages and races and also inspire the public to take action for a heart-healthy life.
Two of the survivors featured are Abigail Duncan and Jody Yost. At age 9, Abigail is the ultimate testament that heart disease affects all ages. She was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy at 3 months old. She underwent a successful heart transplant when she was only 5-years-old. Jody Yost survived cardiac arrest and understands the importance of knowing the warning signs of heart disease. She was misdiagnosed with a gastro intestinal problem just weeks before she went into cardiac arrest.
The Bakersfield Go Red For Women Luncheon is an event designed to empower, educate and encourage women to take action to fight their No. 1 killer – heart disease. It also raises much-needed funds to support the American Heart Association’s research and educational efforts. The event also featured a fashion show by Macy’s and two educational breakout sessions featuring a healthy cooking demonstration and a discussion about women and heart disease. Health speaker, humorist and author Kathleen Passanisi was be the keynote speaker.
