Driving, getting married, fishing, hunting, practicing medicine.....what do these things have in common? You need a license! But when it comes to parenting a human from age zero until they are off on their own, (parenting doesn't stop then, the dinamics just change) one doesn't need any type of training! Parenting is THEE one thing in my life that changes daily. It is on the job training at it's best.
After almost 17 years "on the job", I feel like a new employee. I desperately need to find an older, wiser "employee" who can give me some pointers! HELP!!!!!!!!
Comments
If you've found this older, wiser "employee" please share her number! I'm a mom wondering when and why did my job duties change??
Just when you get the hang of something, your child changes! Every now and then I get some sass from my 7-year-old that I expect will be much more frequent in his teenage years. I don't envy your position, and I've no advice to offer other than: breathe deeply! If you're able to take notes now, save them so I'll have someone wiser than me to talk to!!!
I'm no expert because I think all kids are different. But so far, so good with me. My son is 19, my daughters are 17 and (almost) 15, and our trials have been very few. I have very strong opinions on parenting, especially when parents talk about letting a child be free to express herself. Uh, no. That rarely works out.
If you need any advice, I suggest you find someone who you perceive as "doing something right" with regard to raising her kids, and I would listen to every word she says. In my experience, people want to hear good advice, but then they don't want to take it, citing that "Oh, my kid would never go for that," and so forth. But if you know someone who has produced great offspring, she just might have something very positive and helpful to offer. :)
You're doing a great job, though... both of you. I just know it. Keep up the good work.
I knew I was going to like your article from the title alone!
Isn't it amazing that we are allowed to take this journey without passing some sort of test? I told my husband when we had our first daughter, that although we had prepared ourselves to the best of our ability, it still felt strange that we were allowed to leave the hospital with this little bundle of joy without first proving to someone that we were qualified to do so.
Now nearly 9 years later and, like you, often times I just wonder who to call for help. When I don't understand an assignment at school, I just go back and reread the directions over and over again until I get it. When I want to know know what's wrong with my vehicle, I call my mechanic. When I want to know my bank account balance, I simply hop on the internet. However, I have yet to find that infamous "Instruction Manual for Rearing Children While Avoiding Conflict". And when I call the 24-hour Help line, it seems as if it's always busy!!
What gives?
